Chickens and Hens
Echeveria elegans · Crassulaceae
How it looks
The Mexican Giant (Chickens and Hens) is a succulent whose thick, spoon-shaped fleshy leaves gather in a rosette radiating like a rose, with offset pups growing attached at the sides. The leaves are blue-gray to silvery, and the rosette is 2–6 in (5–15 cm) across.
Chickens and Hens (Echeveria elegans) has no known toxicity to cats. Like most succulents, its soft, water-filled leaves make it relatively safe.
Guide for parents
A safe plant, but fallen leaves can become rolling toys. Pick them up the same day. If your cat likes to eat soil, fertilizer ingredients can upset their stomach — a pebble topping is recommended. It's a succulent that loves strong sun, so a bright windowsill is the ideal spot. Water deeply, but only after the soil has dried out completely.
