Easter Lily Cactus

Echinopsis multiplex · Cactaceae

How it looks

Easter Lily Cactus (Echinopsis) is a cactus with cylindrical to globe-shaped succulent stems densely covered in ribs and spines. Very large white or pink trumpet-shaped flowers, 6–8 in (15–20 cm) long, bloom from the sides of the stem. It stands 8–20 in (20–50 cm) tall.

Easter Lily Cactus (Echinopsis multiplex) is not a true lily and has no known toxicity to cats. Despite the "Easter Lily" in its name, it's actually a cactus.

Guide for parents

Its name invites confusion with the Easter lily, but it's an entirely different plant, identified by the scientific name Echinopsis. It's a safe cactus, though it does have spines, so keep it out of reach. Unlike true lilies (Lilium), it does not cause kidney failure in cats. It blooms showily in spring and summer, and the keys to care are strong sunlight and restrained watering.
