Hibiscus

Hibiscus syriacus · Malvaceae

How it looks

Hibiscus bears flowers with toothed deep-green leaves and five large petals opening wide in a trumpet or saucer shape. Inside the flower is a dark-colored pattern and long-protruding yellow anthers, with pink, red, purple, and white common. It reaches about 3-10 ft (1-3 m) tall.

Hibiscus has no known toxicity to cats. It's a garden and summer-bouquet staple you can feel at ease about.

Guide for parents

Hibiscus is safe both as a summer cut flower and as a potted plant. The large, richly colored petals draw feline curiosity. When displayed as cut stems, place the vase where your cat can't drink the water. Clearing dropped petals as soon as they wilt is enough. Grown in a pot, it needs plenty of sun and regular watering. Even if your cat chews a petal, there's no toxicity concern — simple monitoring is enough.
