Miniature Date Palm
Phoenix roebelenii · Arecaceae
How it looks
Miniature Date Palm is a small palm with slender, soft feather-shaped fronds that arch gracefully from a short trunk. The fronds are dark green, and the leaf stalks bear short spines. It grows 2–6.5 ft (60 cm–2 m) tall and is popular as an indoor palm.
This palm (Phoenix roebelenii) has no known toxicity to cats. It is one of the safer species among indoor palms.
Guide for parents
The pointed leaf tips can scratch the inside of a mouth, so choose its spot with care. It's often recommended as an indoor air-purifying plant, and its safety as a palm is well established. Picking up fallen fronds the same day is enough. It likes bright indirect light and is sensitive to cold, so in winter keep it a little away from the window. Yellowing leaf tips signal overwatering or underwatering.
