Peacock Ginger
Kaempferia · Zingiberaceae
How it looks
Peacock Ginger (Kaempferia) is a ginger-family plant whose large round leaves spread flat against the ground, marked with deep-green and silver patterning like a peacock's tail. Small purple to pale-violet flowers appear at the center, and it reaches about 4-8 in (10-20 cm) tall.
Peacock Ginger has no known toxicity to cats. It's a safe foliage plant with striking leaf patterns.
Guide for parents
The showy leaf patterns easily catch a cat's eye. It's a safe plant, but make a habit of picking up broken leaves the same day. If your cat likes to eat soil, a pebble topping is recommended. As a tropical plant that loves warmth and high humidity, it needs steady indoor temperatures in winter. Direct sun scorches the leaves, so bright indirect light is the best spot.
