Rose
Rosa Species · Rosaceae
How it looks
The Rose is a shrub with thorns on its branches and alternate, toothed leaves divided into a feather (pinnate) shape. The flowers, with many layered petals, come in a very wide range of colors-red, pink, yellow, white, orange, purple-and are strongly fragrant. Height 20 in-10 ft (50 cm-3 m).
The flowers of Rose themselves are non-toxic to cats. The real risks are the thorns on the stems, which can injure the mouth and paws, and any pesticides used on cut flowers.
Guide for parents
The plant itself is safe, but cut stems from a florist are often treated with preservatives and fungicides. Keep your cat from drinking the vase water as well. Trimming off the thorns before arranging prevents physical injuries too. With a potted Rose, pesticide or fertilizer residues can remain in the soil, so covering the soil with pebbles to keep your cat from digging is recommended.
