Sweet Pea
Lathyrus latifolius · Fabaceae
How it looks
Sweet Pea grows as a vine with butterfly-shaped flowers gathered 5–8 per cluster at the stem tips. Pink, purple, white, and pale yellow are common, with a strong sweet fragrance. The leaves are oval and paired oppositely, with clinging tendrils at the tips.
Sweet Pea (Lathyrus latifolius) is non-toxic to cats according to the ASPCA. That said, eating a large amount could cause mild stomach upset, so it's best to limit access.
Guide for parents
Sweet Pea is a fragrant flower that sometimes comes in as a spring cut flower. Its scent and soft shape make it easy to catch a cat's interest. The seed pods that form after the flower wilts are especially dangerous, so dispose of them as soon as they fade. If you see unsteadiness, convulsions, or head-pressing against a wall, head to an animal hospital right away. Neurological symptoms progress quickly.
