Squirrel's Foot Fern
Humata tyermanii · Davalliaceae
How it looks
Squirrel's Foot Fern is a fern with soft, feather-shaped, deeply lobed fronds and fuzzy brown "feet" (rhizomes) that creep over the edge of the pot. The rhizomes resemble a squirrel's foot. It reaches 12-20 in (30-50 cm) tall.
Squirrel's Foot Fern (Squirrel's Foot Fern) has no known toxicity to cats. It's a safe fern known for its fuzzy rhizomes.
Guide for parents
A safe fern, but its fuzzy rhizomes invite a lot of pawing and fiddling. Pick up fallen fronds the same day, and if it lives somewhere humid like the bathroom, check for other chemical exposure there as well. A hanging basket naturally reduces access. Mist once or twice a week for humidity, and don't let the roots dry out.
