Sunflower
Helianthus angustifolius · Asteraceae
How it looks
Sunflower bears a very large flower (4–12 in / 10–30 cm across) with a big brown-to-black center surrounded by yellow petals spread in a star shape. The leaves are large and heart-shaped with coarse hairs, and the stem grows upright to 3–10 ft (1–3 m).
Sunflower has no known toxicity to cats. It's a safe flower that often appears at florists as a summer and fall cut flower.
Guide for parents
A safe plant, but cut stems are often treated with florist preservatives, so place the vase where your cat can't drink the water. The large leaves may catch your cat's attention, but a nibble or two is no big deal. The thick stems sit securely in a vase, but wilted petals can be slippery when they drop — pick them up the same day.
